How To Analyze Site Demographics To Benefit Internet Marketing Efforts

Internet marketing can be challenging, even to many seasoned advertising specialists. In the real, brick-and-mortar world, advertisers can choose amongst many methods and gimmicks to get the word out on a product, service, person, or new company. Advertisers can employ flyers, brochures, and pamphlets that can be as simple as a printed sheet of paper, or as complex and expensive as a glossy fold or pop-out that even kids can enjoy. There are commercial spots for television and radio, as well as product endorsements within movies. Even with many hard-selling techniques on hand, advertisers may still fail to annoy if they know which specific market they should target and how.

On the other hand, Internet market entails using a digital medium that is visual and auditory in nature, but that is difficult to look at for a long period of time. Brochures and pamphlets do not work here, and product placement is often difficult to come by if some website developers prefer not to place too many links, graphics, or animation in their web pages. As a result, Internet marketing specialists have a very small window of opportunity to make their mark: they have only about fifteen seconds at most to grab the attention of an Internet viewer, and they need their marketing strategies to work well enough to persuade a website visitor to buy a product or purchase a service.

There are many ways to carry out Internet marketing. Perhaps the easiest, or most versatile, as far as planning for visuals and appearance goes, is writing search engine optimized articles. Such articles are short and chock-full of information. They are fashioned to cater to a specific audience or sector of the market, and they can come in the form of lists of tips, advice, or warnings. Search engine optimized articles also contain a specific number of keywords or key phrases which, if picked up by search engine robots and crawlers, can allow the website or web page to be indexed for that particular keyword or key phrase.

Internet marketers can also post advertisements online in the form of banners, pop-up or pop-under ads, and text or link-based advertisements. This time, Internet marketers work with very little space, and can have only a few words at their disposal to beckon website visitors and make these visitors click on the link and go to the main site, where products and services are being offered up for sale. Such advertisements might contain words like “discount,” “best in the market,” “new and effective,” or “the only one of its kind.” Although not all Internet advertisements show the truth, or even come close to it, Internet advertisements have to be extremely terse and attractive in order to make sales happen online.

So how do Internet marketers choose which Internet marketing strategy they should employ? As in the real, brick-and-mortar world, Internet marketers formulate a marketing plan by studying the target market. This includes looking at the number of males or females, the relative age distribution, and the spending habits of the market. Such facts are harder to come by online, so when site demographics are taken into consideration, they can include statistics that can either be measured by online surveys, or by looking at traffic statistics.

As an Internet marketer, you can administer a brief online survey to a website’s visitors. This survey should have no more than five or six questions, and should be very easy to answer: that is, it should not require participants to make formulated, essay-type answers, and it should be finished in a minute or less. If you have enough funds, provide incentives to website visitors who answer the survey, such as free e-books or product samples, or discount coupons. Questions should allow you to make a demographic profile of your website visitors.

You can also analyze traffic statistics to look at the site’s demographics. At what time of the day is the website most visited? Having a lot of hits at lunch time? Then perhaps you can appeal to people’s taste for food or good desserts, or a good nap at work by tailoring your marketing techniques to meet with these needs. Having a lot of hits late at night? Then you can make Internet advertisements that slant toward sleep or dreaming. The possibilities are endless, no matter what sector you work for, or what company employs you as its Internet marketer.

A website’s traffic statistics can be very important when Internet marketing is considered. For instance, some traffic statistics programs tell you where website visitors came from before they went to the website, and where they went after. This can give you a good idea about what other interests your website visitors have. Other traffic statistics programs show what keywords fed into search engines led to your site. This can help you adjust any articles or web pages so that you are better optimized for a greater number of keywords.

Internet marketing can be difficult to do, but you only need to understand the behavior of your target market in order to make a difference. This obligation is the same online as it is offline, so plan your techniques well and make those profits soar!
